History

The Uruguayan kennel club was created in 1938 and we have been working since then to promote the breeding of pure pedigree dogs. In this opportunity our institution is very proud to present the original Uruguayan canine breed: “The Cimarron”. The Uruguayan Cimarron has been very helpful thru out our history.
The founder of our homeland “Jose Artigas” ones quoted: ”When I run out of soldiers I should fight with Cimarrones”.
We really hope that the rest of the organizations that integrate the Cynologique International Federation would be able to recognize the Cimarron’s many virtues.
Our Cimarron is an excellent hunter (especially wild board) very good guardian and an unconditional partner.

Historical Summary:

Many of the domestic animals introduced to America by the first colonists gain their freedom and went back to their wild life style, except our Cimarron on which case the retroversion to the primitive life was never totally completed, they always conserved characters that reveal their precedent from domestic progenitors.
The origin of our Cimarron is uncertain, what we do know is that they descended from the dogs introduced by the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors.
These dogs left in our country crossed among themselves, surviving only the strongest and the most clever, adapting to our land, they grow into very large groups, becoming a threat to the country site people and their cattle, this situation reach the authorities attention and at the end of XVIII thousands of dogs were sacrificed, the few that survived moved into the hills of Otazo and the Cerros Largos.
Many of the land owners were able to recognize the good qualities of the Cimarron and decided to tame them and use the fast learning abilities of the dogs to train them to work with cattle and to guard the properties.

The Uruguayan Cimarron in the last 10 years:

In 1989 the Uruguayan Cimarron was officially recognized by the Uruguayan Rural Association and the K.C.U (Kennel Club Uruguayo). That same year was created the Association of Cimarron’s breeders; basic dogs were selected, registered and tattooed by the Uruguayan Kennel Club.
Up to date more than 2000 Cimarrones are registered in the K.C.U Genealogical records.
Since 1989 our Cimarron dogs compete in the 20 yearly exhibitions carried out in Uruguay and organized by the K.C.U.
In the last few years the Cimarron breed popularity has grown notably, today we can find them all over Uruguay and in some foreign countries also.
All this progressive growth has been observed and controlled rigorously.
On order to register a new dog in the K.C.U he most passed an inspection, done by three judges specialized in this breed.
The Chair of genetic improvement of the veterinarian faculty jointly with the breeder’s society signed a new project dedicated to study the levels of consanguinity between the registered dogs.
